Thornham Walks’ Pioneering Path Opens
Pupils from Gislingham Primary School were among the first to try out Thornham Walks’ new 0.75-mile accessible footpath, made from over 5,000 recycled tyres—thought to be the first of its kind in Suffolk.
Funded by Mid Suffolk District Council, the path is surfaced with Flexipave, a blend of 50% recycled tyres and 50% aggregate, bound with an environmentally friendly binder. This porous material filters water, removing up to 90% of soluble phosphates and nitrates while improving drainage. The previous cracked tarmac was reused as groundwork, further supporting sustainability.
The new pathway enhances accessibility for visitors of all abilities and ensures a durable, low-maintenance surface that blends into its natural surroundings. Volunteers and local groups played a key role in making the project a reality, with support from the Friends of Thornham Walks

Run Free! Dog Zone now at Thornham Walks!!
To help protect local wildlife, all dogs must be kept on leads while using the footpaths at Thornham Walks. However, our Run Free! Dog Zone offers a safe, enclosed space where dogs can run off-lead and socialise. It’s located opposite the overflow car park and is free to use—just make sure your vehicle displays a valid parking ticket, as parking fees help support the upkeep of the Walks.
